Stock Upgrades: TripAdvisor Heading North

Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL Heineken (HINKY), the pride of Holland, yesterday gained 1.67% to near a new high on an analyst upgrade. Investors shouldn't expect a check in the mail any time soon, however, given how horrendously the country's greatest ever artist was just treated by the postal service. A similarly upbeat research assessment sent Rosetta Genomics (ROSG) up 34.46%. Genes certainly did better than jeans on a day denim disciple Guess? (GES) dropped 22.63% to post the NYSE's poorest performance. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) imploded 8.15% for the Dow's (^DJI) worst showing. Apparently the smart money, which only months earlier seemed sanguine about the tech titan's PC flip-flops, is now flip-flopping on their earlier verdict. On an otherwise anemic August Friday for corporate earnings announcements, Madison Square Garden (MSG), trading at an all-time high, easily exceeded analyst expectations earlier this morning.

American Eagle Outfitters (AEO): The clothing company is upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

Braskem (BAK): Shares are now Overweight from Neutral at HSBC Securities.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY): Bank of America-Merrill Lynch moves the pharmaceutical firm to Buy from Neutral.

Federated Investors (FII): Shares get upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Citigroup amid reduced risk of money market reform. The target is also taken up, by $3 to $25.

Frontline (FRO): The company is now Neutral from Sell at Goldman Sachs, which also removes it from the Conviction Sell list.

TCF Financial (TCB): BMO Capital takes TCB to Outperform from Market Perform.

TripAdvisor (TRIP): Shares are boosted to Buy from Neutral at Citi amid a more attractive valuation. The price objective is $44.

USG Corp (USG): Longbow lifts the name to Buy from Neutral based on an improving US housing market among other favorable factors.
