Stock Upgrades: Talisman Energy a Good Luck Charm

Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL The Iraq War, suddenly again on the front burner, is often dismissed as Dick Cheney's land grab, but his Halliburton (HAL) bucked a dire day to advance 2.40%. Hasbro (HAS), whose soldiers are strictly of the toy G.I. Joe variety, similarly jumped 3.99%. Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) followed last week's 19% nosedive by falling a further 3.46%, but B&G Foods (BGS) - maker of tacos, tortillas, and enchiladas - gained 2.93% to an all-time high, redeeming the reputation of the country's cuisine.

Meanwhile Peregrine Pharmaceuticals (PPHM) redeemed the reputation of a proud bird of prey that has recently been unfairly tarred and feathered by soaring 35.41%. Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), in the spirit of Seinfeld, lost a mint and fell 4.22%. The operation may have been a success but the patient still died, particularly if it answers to the name of Digital Domain Media Group (DDMG). Its shares tumbled 10.08%; they just brought Tupac back from the Great Beyond but the company itself is clearly in failing health.

It's a torrid Tuesday for quarterly earnings announcements, with Apple (AAPL), AT&T (T), Biogen Idec (BIIB), DuPont (DD), EMC Corp. (EMC), Netflix (NFLX), SAP AG (SAP), United Parcel Service (UPS), and Whirlpool (WHR) all expected to release results.

MetroPCS (PCS): PCS is upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Macquarie.

Motorola Solutions (MSI): Shares are now Perform from Underperform at FBR Capital, which takes its target up to $49 from $43 amid stronger-than-expected government sales.

Publicis Groupe (PGPEF): Shares are up in Europe today after Barclays boosted it to Overweight from Neutral.

Genesee & Wyoming (GWR): GWR gets upgraded to Overweight from Equal-Weight at Morgan Stanley.

Goodyear Tire (GT): GT gets upgraded to Neutral from Sell at Goldman, whose target is $13.

Portland General Electric (POR): Goldman gives the utility outfit a Neutral-from-Sell upgrade.

Sonoco Products (SON): Shares are now Neutral from Sell at Goldman Sachs.

Talisman Energy (TLM): TLM is taken to Buy from Hold at Canaccord Genuity.
