Stock Upgrades: Rite Aid Is Right On

By

Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.

Wall Street went round in circles in a session where it was hip to be square. The Dow (INDEXDJX:.DJI) dropped only slightly on a desultory trading day dominated by disparate developments in Tiananmen, Red, Pershing, and Herald. China sent copper cratering. Investors eyed the latest developments in midtown Moscow, where floppy-haired Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin met Ronnie in '88. (Hey, that look was big back then; the bald truth is I had the exact same follicular formation in high school.) Herbalife (NYSE:HLF) imploded 1.16% following a presentation by Bill Ackman. And Macy's (NYSE:M), up 1.41% at a historic high, provided a miracle on 34th Street after a broker boostPlug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) plunged 41.51% due to being called a "casino stock" by an analyst. This is a diss? On a day Sin City's Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) surged 16.53% to top the NYSE by a mile? J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP), which jumped 19% last week, added on another 2.97%. Clearly, the company continues to gain traction with its "When It Fits, You Feel It" advertising campaign. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite the case with OJ Simpson, whose Hertz (NYSE:HTZstock options are now mercifully worth much less after the car rental company lost 3.74%.

It's another quite quiet day in economic data but corporate earnings announcements are expected out of Express Inc. (NYSE:EXPR), Krispy Kreme (NYSE:KKD), Vail Resorts (NYSE:MTN), and Williams-Sonoma (NYSE:WSM).

AngioDynamics (NASDAQ:ANGO): Raymond James raises its recommendation to Outperform from Market Perform.

Brandywine Realty (NYSE:BDN): BDN gets an Equal Weight-from-Underweight boost by Barclays.

Chevron (NYSE:CVX): The Dow member gets added to Credit Suisse's US Focus List of favored equities.

Euronet Worldwide (NASDAQ:EEFT): Avondale increases its investment assessment to Outperform from Market Perform.

General Growth Properties (NYSE:GGP): GGP gets upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight by Barclays.

McKesson (NYSE:MCK): Hailing the firm's "outsized earnings potential," Goldman Sachs adds its stock to the Conviction Buy list.

Petrobras Brasileiro (NYSE:PBR): The Brazilian oil giant, better known as Petrobras, is now Neutral from Underperform at Credit Suisse.

PharMerica (NYSE:PMC): Shares are now Outperform from Neutral, again at Credit Suisse.

Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD): Goldman Sachs gives the stock a Buy-from-Neutral upgrade, sending it 2.80% higher as we speak.

Summit Midstream Partners (NYSE:SMLP): The limited partnership gets lifted to Outperform from Neutral by Robert W. Baird.

VeriFone (NYSE:PAY): Impressive earnings and a Hold-from-Sell hoist at Deutsche Bank is sending this stock up 11.08% even as I write this article.

VMware (NYSE:VMW): Credit Suisse adds the equity to its US Focus List.
