Stocks were doing swimmingly before embarking upon a sudden road to Damascus U-turn on, well, the road to Damascus. Syrian worries allied to debt ceiling concerns here at home saw the Dow (INDEXDJX:.DJI) reverse a prior 39-point gain to end down 64. Bill Ackman wrote only one week ago that "the story of our investment in JC Penney (NYSE:JCP) is not over yet" but you don't mess with Mick Jagger, and the retailer imploded 1.11% as a hedge fund honcho finally said no to an expensive steak. Adding to a torrid time for Tysons, Tyson Foods (NYSE:TSN) tumbled an S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) worst 7.34% after receiving a ratings reduction. In his prime of course, the boxer made himself heard in singular fashion and "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears" proved profitable for Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ:CZR), which jumped 5.69% amid the downdraft. Van Gogh didn't have an extra ear to lend, alas, but he did hear money talk when his 'Irises' sold for $53.9 million at Sothebys (NYSE:BID) in Wall Street's frightful fall of 1987. Yesterday the auction house gained 2.99% as billionaire Dan Loeb demonstrated his hitherto-unknown love for starving artists.

Today's economic data includes August consumer sentiment from The Conference Board at 10:00 a.m. Eastern, with consensus calling for a fall from the prior month's pace.
