Compared with what happened exactly half a decade earlier, when Alan Greenspan told a US House committee the United States was "in the midst of a once-in-a-century credit tsunami," October 23, 2013 was a walk in the park. Still, the S&P 500 Index (INDEXSP:.INX) did snap a streak of four straight records amid some iffy earnings announcements. Not, however, by Boeing (NYSE:BA) which rose 5.34% to best all Dow (INDEXDJX:.DJI) issues in ending at a historic high. Boeing Boeing was a well-reviewed play about the "Coffee, tea, or me?" era in the sky, and java giant Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) just bet big on the middle option. As Germany's "iron chancellor" seethed at snooping, America's largest iron ore outfit Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE:CLF) cratererd 2.86% in a slumping commodity sector. And a new study showed many of us plan to work until we die. Based on Jacko's beyond-the-grave earnings, it's not a bad idea.

The single busiest session for third quarter earnings is upon us, with Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), Credit Suisse (NYSE:CS) Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW), Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), Ford (NYSE:F), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), 3M Co (NYSE:MMM), Under Armour (NYSE:UA), Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC), and Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) all due to announce results.

Apollo Global Management (NYSE:APO): Shares are initiated with a Sector Perform at RBC Capital, whose target is $35.

Baltic Trading (NYSE:BALT): The stock is a new Outperform at Imperial Capital, whose price objective is $7.

Goldcorp (NYSE:GG): The commodity company gets begun with a Buy at Canaccord Genuity.

Home Bancshares (NASDAQ:HOMB): Sterne Agee has a new Neutral on HOMB.

Lemaitre Vascular (NASDAQ:LMAT): LATM is launched with a Buy at The Benchmark Company.

Madison Square Garden (NASDAQ:MSG): Guggenheim gives the company a Buy rating.

Media & Entertainment: Guggenheim has a Buy on Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) and CBS Corp (NYSE:CBS). Its new Neutrals include Viacom (NASDAQ:VIAB) and Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS).

Pharmacy Stocks: CVS Caremark (NYSE:CVS) is an Outperform at FBR Capital, which has a new Perform on Walgreen (NYSE:WAG).

Tahoe Resources (NYSE:TAHO): Shares are initiated with a Buy at Canaccord Genuity.
