Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.

On the day Hollywood honored Gravity, Wall Street stopped defying it. (The good news for committed bachelor Clooney, should he eventually get itchy feet stuck up in Outer Space with Sandra, is that Match.com may be able to help even him get a date after its parent IAC/InterActiveCorp (NASDAQ:IACI) advanced 2.05% to hit a historic high.) The S&P 500 Index (INDEXSP:.INX) fell back down to Earth following Wednesday's record-setting showing as it and the Dow (INDEXDJX:.DJI) each dropped amid an avalanche of earnings reports. Admittedly, some equities did buck a bad tape. On a day money was mostly mute, Listening to Prozac proved profitable as its owner Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) advanced. Talk to Chuck? Equally sage advice after Charles Schwab (NYSE:SCHW) rose 2.96% to a 13-year peak. There were no half-wits, what with Wipro (NYSE:WIT) surging 5.87%, Meredith Whitney's husband John Layfield enjoying a 3.54% jump in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and Meg Whitman's Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) ending up 2.50% after being boosted by Bank of America-Merrill Lynch (NYSE:BAC), which was at its wit's end five years ago, but has since enjoyed a remarkable recovery.

In terms of economic events that may move US stock markets ahead of the holiday weekend, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary January consumer sentiment survey is expected to tick up from December 2013's final figure at 9:55 a.m. Eastern. Regarding specific stocks, Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK), Comerica (NYSE:CMA), General Electric (NYSE:GE), Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), SunTrust Banks (NYSE:STI), and aforementioned Indian outsourcer Wipro all release results.

Apparel: Macquarie has a new Neutral and $92 target price on Under Armour (NYSE:UA) but is more bullish on Outperform-rated V.F. Corp (NYSE:VFC), on which it has a $71 price objective.

Cummins (NYSE:CMI): Shares are picked up with a Positive rating and $165 target at Susquehanna.

Dillard's (NYSE:DDS): Bank of America-Merrill Lynch launches Buy-rated research and assigns a price objective of $110.

Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA): Electronic Arts stock is covered with a Buy at CRT Capital.

LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD): LinkedIn stock surged some 6.74% yesterday, but will it play in Peoria? Topeka has a lukewarm Hold on the professional networking name.

Live Nation Entertainment (NYSE:LYV): Sterne Agee starts Buy-rated research, and a $24 target, on the stock.

Magellan Midstream (NYSE:MMP): Citing the limited partnership's robust asset base, Wunderlich begins Buy-rated coverage. Its objective is $71.

Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE): Nike is a new Neutral at Macquarie. Its target on the stock is $80.

Sinclair Broadcast (NASDAQ:SBGI): Shares are an Outperform at RBC Capital, which notes the potential to monetize its spectrum.

Stamps.com (NASDAQ:STMP): The Nasdaq (INDEXNASDAQ:.IXIC) just called and wants its 1999 heroes back. Stamps.com, big back in the dot-com bubble, is begun with a bullish Outperform at Northland Capital. Its target on the stock is $46.

Twitter (NYSE:TWTR): Twitter stock is up sharply this morning on the back of a Buy initiation at Stifel, whose objective is $75. The broker notes that advertiser adoption rates are still in the early innings.
