Plus, there are purchases at Audience and Kanye Anderson MLP and sales at General Growth Properties, the Chubb Corporation, and Sally Beauty.
In a victory for common sense, the trading behavior of company executives, directors, and large shareholders in the stocks of firms they're registered "insiders" at have been proven profitable to monitor by both academic studies and (more importantly) the experience of your fellow professional investors.
Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday, March 8, 2013 as ranked by dollar value.
Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.
In insider purchases, William Greehey, a Director of petroleum storage and transportation company NuStar Energy (NYSE:NS), bought $4,090,158 worth of company stock. At Dresser-Rand Group (NYSE:DRC), which specializes in engineered rotating equipment solutions, President and CEO Vincent Volpe Jr. bought $1,008,114 of company stock. Kevin Palatnik, the CFO of intelligent voice and mobile audio solutions company Audience (NASDAQ:ADNC), bought $659,498 worth of company stock. John Frey, Vice President, Assistant Secretary, and Assistant Treasurer of Kanye Anderson MLP Investment Company (NYSE:KYN), bought $505,738 while Executive Vice President James Baker bought $333,600 worth of company stock.
In insider sales, John Schreiber, a Director of General Growth Properties Inc. (NYSE:GGP), sold $356,400,000 worth of the real estate investment trust. The private equity firm TA Associates sold $13,664,379 worth of stock in wireless mobile services company MetroPCS Communications (NYSE:PCS). The Chairman of TA Associates, C. Kevin Landry, is a Director of MetroPCS. At property and casualty insurance company The Chubb Corporation (NYSE:CB), Chairman and President John Finnegan sold $4,994,353. Gary Winterhalter, the Chairman, President, and CEO of beauty supply chain Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. (NYSE:SBH) sold $5,020,009. At pharmaceutical company Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), Olivier Brandicourt, the President and General Manager of Emerging Markets and Established Products, sold $3,189,585 of company stock.
At InsiderInsights.com, we find new investment ideas just about every day using these and more intricate insider screens to determine where we should focus our subsequent fundamental and technical analysis. And while stocks don't (or shouldn't) move up or down based on insider activity alone, insiders tend to be good indicators of when real stock-moving events like earnings surprises, corporate actions, and new products may be in the offing.
