Stock Upgrades: Green Mountain Far From Over the Hill

By

Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.

In twenty-four hours we will mark fifty years since "the seven seconds that broke the back of the American century." Yesterday, Wall Street measured time in minutes (the Fed's), days (the S&P 500′s (INDEXSP:.INX) losing streak now stands at three), weeks (stocks are on their longest losing run in eight), and months (gold fell to its lowest level in four). At the Berlin Wall, Beantown icon JFK famously said "Ich bin ein Berliner," which translates to "I am a jelly doughnut." Still, better that than jam, on a day J.M. Smucker (NYSE:SJM) slumped an S&P 500-worst 6.54%. (Boston Kreme fared little better, with a decidedly iffy analyst initiation inflicting a 1.41% drop upon Dunkin' Donuts (NASDAQ:DNKN), pride of Quincy, Massachusetts.) An equally downbeat research assessment saw Twitter's (NASDAQ:TWTR) bluebird tumble 1.68% and, elsewhere in the air, previously high-flying Boeing (NYSE:BA) lost 3.31% to lead Dow (INDEXDJX:.DJI) laggards after incurring a rating reduction. This as an utterly broke JC Penney (NYSE:JCP), whose jet-setting executives have single-handedly kept Boeing in business, rose 8.38% to top the entire S&P 500.

In terms of economic events that may move US markets this morning, analysts expect a fall in November's Philadelphia Fed Index at 10:00 a.m. Eastern. Regarding specific stocks, Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE:ANF), Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR), Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS), GameStop (NYSE:GME), Intuit (NASDAQ:INTU), Pandora (NASDAQ:P), Ross Stores (NASDAQ:ROST), Sears Holdings (NASDAQ:SHLD), Splunk (NASDAQ:SPLK), Target (NYSE:TGT), and The Fresh Market (NASDAQ:TFM) are all due to report quarterly results.

Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP): Advance Auto Parts is now Outperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse. Stock in Advanced Auto Parts has advanced 25.78% in the past year.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ:GMCR): More good news for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, which rode a broker boost to end up even in yesterday's down market. Shares are now Buy from Neutral at Janney. This after Green Mountain Coffee Roasters reported fourth-quarter profit that beat Street estimates. As a result, stock in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is advancing an additional 6.98% even as I write this article.

Hillshire Brands (NYSE:HSH): Shares are moved to Outperform from Market Perform by BMO Capital. The company's products include Jimmy Dean and Ball Park franks.

Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP): Leap Wireless is lifted to Hold from Sell at Deutsche Bank. Leap Wireless stock has surged 175.51% in the last 12 months.

Rayonier (NYSE:RYN): Deutsche Bank raises RYN to Hold from Sell.

Westar Energy (NYSE:WR): UBS boosts the stock to Buy from Neutral.
