Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday, January 23, 2013, as ranked by dollar value. Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.

In insider purchases, Daniel Ivascyn, a lead portfolio manager for PIMCO, bought $2,301,489 worth of the $1.25 billion close-ended PIMCO Dynamic Income Fund (NYSE:PDI), which he runs. Antranik Armoudian, President and CEO of Encompass Energy (PINK:EESI), bought $250,000 worth of stock. At SunCoke Energy (NYSE:SXCP), the largest independent producer of high-quality metallurgical coke in the Americas, Chairman and CEO Frederick Henderson bought $228,000 worth of stock, President and COO Michael Thomson bought $95,000 worth of stock, and CFO Mark Newman bought $79,800 worth of stock.

In sales, Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) sold $326,261,248 worth of Cobalt International Energy (NYSE:CIE), a development stage oil exploration and production company. At agriculture products company Monsanto (NYSE:MON), Chairman and CEO Hugh Grant sold $3,064,338 worth of company stock.
