In a victory for common sense, the trading behavior of company executives, directors, and large shareholders in the stocks of firms they're registered "insiders" at have been proven profitable to monitor by both academic studies and (more importantly) the experience of your fellow professional investors.

Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Tuesday, March 12, 2013 as ranked by dollar value.

Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.

In insider purchases, Carl Icahn added $13,376,578 worth of stock to his holding of network marketing company Herbalife (NYSE:HLF), increasing pressure on Bill Ackman's attempt to short sell the company. At alternative fuel components and systems company Fuel Systems Solutions (NASDAQ:FSYS), Beneficiary Owner Kevin Douglas bought $1,584,264 worth of company stock. Craig Johnson, the Vice Chairman of JMP Group (NYSE:JMP) bought $324,164 worth of the investment banking and asset management company's stock, while Director Jonathan Orszaq bought $126,716 worth of stock.

In insider sales, at Jazz Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:JAZZ), the KKR Fund of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (NYSE:KKR), sold $218,550,004 worth of stock while Director Kenneth O'Keefe sold $23,312,000 worth of stock. Larry Page, the Co-Founder and CEO of Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), sold $17,408,876 worth of company stock. At online city guide company Yelp (NYSE:YELP), Director Max Levchin sold $9,701,649 worth of company stock. David Brandon, a Director at Domino's Pizza (NYSE:DPZ), sold $6,360,519 worth of company stock.

At InsiderInsights.com, we find new investment ideas just about every day using these and more intricate insider screens to determine where we should focus our subsequent fundamental and technical analysis. And while stocks don't (or shouldn't) move up or down based on insider activity alone, insiders tend to be good indicators of when real stock-moving events like earnings surprises, corporate actions, and new products may be in the offing.
