Plus, purchases at VMware, Digital Generation, and Cheesecake Factory and sales at Guidewire Software and Macy's.
In a victory for common sense, the trading behavior of company executives, directors, and large shareholders in the stocks of firms they're registered "insiders" at have been proven profitable to monitor by both academic studies and (more importantly) the experience of your fellow professional investors.
Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday, March 1, 2013 as ranked by dollar value.
Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.
In insider purchases, the data storage products and service corporation EMC (NYSE:EMC) bought $3,994,092 worth of stock in virtualization and cloud infrastructure company VMware (NYSE:VMW), of which it is a Beneficiary Owner. At ultra-high measurement solutions company Zygo (NASDAQ:ZIGO), Beneficiary Owner Mak Capital One, a New York based hedge fund, bought $3,650,000 worth of company stock. The Discovery Global Opportunity Master Fund, a Beneficiary Owner of Universal Display (NASDAQ:PANL), bought $2,172,124 of company stock. Universal Display researches, develops, and commercializes organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology, which figures significantly in many next-generation televisions and screens. Scott Ginsburg, the chairman of ad management and distribution platform Digital Generation (NASDAQ:DGIT), bought $2,059,598 worth of company stock. Herbert Simon, a Director of The Cheesecake Factory (NASDAQ:CAKE), bought $698,372 worth of company stock.
In insider sales, the privately owned hedge fund sponsor Spo Advisory, a Beneficiary Owner of outdoor advertising company Lamar Advertising (NASDAQ:LAMR), sold $82,182,592 worth of company stock. At TriMas Corporation (NASDAQ:TRS), a diversified manufacturer and distributor of products for commercial, industrial, and consumer markets, Beneficiary Owner and private equity firm Heartland Industrial sold $43,065,00 worth of company stock. Neal Dempsey, a Director of Guidewire Software (NYSE:GWRE), sold $26,489,290. Guidewire provides system software to the the global property and casualty insurance industry. At retail organization Macy's (NYSE:M), Chairman, President, and CEO Terry Lundgren sold $11,007,979 worth of company stock.
At InsiderInsights.com, we find new investment ideas just about every day using these and more intricate insider screens to determine where we should focus our subsequent fundamental and technical analysis. And while stocks don't (or shouldn't) move up or down based on insider activity alone, insiders tend to be good indicators of when real stock-moving events like earnings surprises, corporate actions, and new products may be in the offing.
