Oh, I like this one. One dog goes one way, the other dog goes the other way, and this guy's sayin', "Whadda ya want from me?"
-- Tommy DeVito, Goodfellas

It's Freaky Friday on Wall and Broad as the stock market migrates along the path of maximum frustration. As the tape just opened and time is the most precious commodity, I humbly submit these Random Thoughts in no particular order:

  • The banks open soft this morning, and this warrants attention for a few reasons. I've updated the KBW Bank Index (INDEXSP:BKX) vs. S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) chart below; either the former rallies or the latter comes in or a combination thereof. It's that simple.

  • I've received multiple requests for an updated Bloomberg SMART Index, which is the second chart below. Caveat emptor, mes frères.

  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is said to be close to buying Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion, a company founded by music industry executives Jimmy Iovine and hip-hop artist Dr. Dre. My Twitter feed had the headlines last night:
  • MV: THIS IS DEDICATED TO THE BUYERS THAT WAS DOWN FROM DAY ONE. $AAPL
  • MV: PRICE TALK IS NINE-DEUCE. $AAPL
  • MV; NEW TAG LINE: APPLE.  CREEPING WHILE YA SLEEPING. $AAPL
  • MV: APPLE TO RELOCATE CORPORATE HEAD OFFICE TO COMPTON-LONG BEACH. $AAPL
  • MV: EMINEM RALLIES IN AFTER-HOURS TRADING. $AAPL

  • As a lifelong Raiders fan, my top choice was Sammy Watkins, but I said going into the NFL Draft that Khalil Mack could be the biggest stud on the board. I'm excited to see him in the silver-and-black; the kid brings with him a commitment to excellence that's been lacking in the Raider Nation for a long time. I'm always excited this time of year; the Raiders are still tied for first.
The Gold Fold?

No, not The Gold Scold -- which was one of the luckier top-ticks in Minyanville history -- this is more of a "Hmmm...interesting."

I saw the first gold chart below and turned my head sideways, wondering if it was an upside-down cup-and-handle, and I'm not sure but...IF gold breaks $1275, it looks to have room to the downside, per the first chart below.

From there, gold $1200 comes into play, and if that puppy breaks, you'll hear a lot of deflation whispers making the rounds.

Answers I Really Wanna Know?

  • My wife is insisting we put the Twitter $29.99 purchase away and revisit it in a few years; do I listen?

  • Well, I always listen to my wife (happy wife, happy life) -- but will she be right?

  • The online media model is broken. Can it be reinvented? (Trying.)

  • What if we're about to enter a prolonged period of compressed volatility?

  • Was the high-beta tech wreck a function of funds getting toe-tagged?

  • Does anyone else remember how the "Nifty Fifty" traded in 1999?

  • Have I really been trading for 24 years? Can I possibly be that old?

  • Will the Fed's last bullet be pointed inward?

  • When does Altria (NYSE:MO) gap higher on news that they're entering the cannabis space?

  • Can I add social climbers to my list of pet peeves?

  • How about that image below, which maps how 37 banks turned into FOUR banks in 20 years?
