This Is How Popular Apple's iPhone Is in Japan

The December 2013 sales rankings for cell phones in Japan tell a surprising story.

According to BCN, a Japanese company that tracks the sale of consumer electronic devices in Japan, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone held the top seven spots for mobile phone sales in December 2013. The number one best-selling phone was the 32GB iPhones 5S sold by the Japanese telecom company SoftBank (OTCMKTS:SFTBF).

In fact, the only two phones in the top 10 not made by Apple were the Sony (NYSE:SNE) Xperia Z1 f SO-02F (No. 8) and the Sony Xperia Z1 SO-01F (No. 10). To see full details, see BCN.

Japan continues to prove itself as a valuable market for Apple and the iPhone: Forbes reported today that Japan is Apple's fastest growing region, with 41% year-over-year growth in the September quarter, and 27% year-over-year growth for the entirety of fiscal year 2013. Additionally, Japan had the highest operating margin of any region in 2013, at an excellent 50.7%. The Americas region had the second highest operating margin at 36.4%.

And to cap it all off, while every other region where Apple products are sold saw operating income decline in the 2013 fiscal year, Japan alone saw an increase, with operating income up by 16% to $6.8 billion.

Given these numbers and the fact that the Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo (NYSE:DCM) has only just begun to sell the iPhone (its 32GB iPhone 5S took No. 6 in the December rankings), there seems to be even more room for growth in the thriving Japanese market.
