By how many units will the iPad mini cannibalize larger iPad sales?
MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) began accepting pre-orders for the Wi-Fi only version of the iPad mini at midnight Pacific time this morning in the US, France, Germany, the UK, and Japan.
CNET reported this morning that by 12:55 a.m. PT, Apple had run out of stock of the white and silver iPad mini. The anticipated shipment date for the white and silver iPad mini in the US had been extended two weeks versus the original November 2 shipping date still available for the black and slate iPad mini. By 12:47 a.m. PT in Germany, all models had the two-week extended shipping dates. In France and the UK, all white models also had a two-week shipping delay.
It remains unclear, though, if a supply problem caused a disparity in pre-orders between the two models, or if the demand for the white and silver model simply outpaced the demand for the black and slate model.
For those who pre-ordered, they will have to go to an Apple store to pick up the tablet if they want to avoid a delay for shipping to their residence. The combined Wi-Fi and 4G cellular version of the iPad mini will ship two weeks later in mid-November.

According to CNET, carriers have not begun to promote the tablet, and the website speculates it will wait for the for the 4G models to arrive before advertising the iPad mini.
Cannibalization Concerns
On the Apple store website, the new iPad with Retina display, the iPad 4, still displays a November 2 shipping date for both models as of the early afternoon. Unless the delayed shipping times for the white and silver iPad mini is from a supply problem and not high demand, the iPad mini appears to be already taking sales away from the iPad 4.
