Why Travelers and Allstate Are Better Bets Than Money Center Banks

Travelers is up 3.1% and Allstate is up 3.54%. On a percentage basis, this isn't as good as what we've seen from money center banks, however insurance names are less risky.

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL Back on August 24 wrote that we prefer less interest-rate-sensitive financials like Travelers (TRV) and Allstate (ALL) than the money center banks. For those of you who missed our follow-up article yesterday to the money center banks story, you can check it out here.

Since that time, Travelers is up 3.1% and Allstate is up 3.54%. On a percentage basis this is not as good as what we have seen from the money center banks, however, theoretically you are taking on less risk with the insurance names. The beta for Travelers is .73 and for Allstate it is .90, which is less than half of Bank of America's (BAC) beta of 1.80.

As you can see below, Allstate is approaching overbought, but we would still remain long until the name approaches an overbought level.

Two other names to watch are CME Group (CME) and Chubb Corporation (CB).
