Apple to Developers: Sorry, No Marketing With Gold iPhone 5S


When it comes to promotions, the company wants to keep the gold iPhone 5S all to itself. Is that because of supply issues?

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) wants to keep its popular, gold-colored iPhone 5S all to itself, or at least, when it comes to marketing. According to MacRumors, Apple is asking app developers to use only certain colors of its devices for the marketing of their apps. The company actually provides a number of iPhone and iPad images with blank display areas so that developers can simply paste a screenshot of their app onto it. As of today, the colors available to developers are the iPhone 5S in silver and space gray, the iPhone 5C in white and blue, the iPad Air in silver and space gray, and the iPad mini in silver or space gray. That's it.

In this way, Apple is keeping marketing of its gold iPhone 5S all to itself in TV and print ads. As Eric Slivka of MacRumors wrote, "Apple prefers to focus on the distinctive color itself."

Steven Sande of TUAW has posited that the gold iPhone 5S developer ban may be a way of keeping demand for the new phone at bay until Apple can boost its production.

The 5S has been a hot ticket smartphone, leading Apple's biggest iPhone debut ever, and the gold version has certainly been the most popular coloration.
