A New, Fat Case for Apple's iPhone Aims to Give You a Workout

The first batch of ToneFones, sold by British company DesirableBody, has already sold out.

Many consumers use apps on their phones to track the number of steps they have taken, their heartbeat, their speed while running, and so forth. Now, however, a new iPhone case is turning the smartphone itself into a workout tool.

Manufactured by the UK-based, online-only fitness and nutrition company DesirableBody, the ToneFone is a phone case that weighs either 2.2 or 3.3 pounds and fits Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones. The ToneFone is made from both solid steel and rubber and is intended to function as a lightweight dumbbell, thereby introducing resistance training every time you reach for your phone (which, of course, can be often).

So why is DesirableBody selling a contraption that makes your iPhone similar to a bulky, early cell phone from the 1980s? As Managing Director Matt Morgan has said, "We can all agree spending too much time on your phone is not good for you. We wanted to change that. What makes the ToneFone special is the ability it gives you to work out wherever you are. It's that freedom, we think, that's meant the ToneFone's been a surprise hit."

Despite the fact that the weight is not that heavy, the first batch of ToneFone cases sold out almost immediately, according to DesirableBody. The company is currently taking preorders for its next batch, which will shape in April. You can buy the 2.2-lb. (or 1-kg) model for £22.90 ($37.81) and the 3.3-lb (1.5-kg) model for £25.40 ($41.94).
