WikiLeaks Shed Light on Russian Business Practices
December 2, 2010 09:52 AM
PERESTROIKA, KIND OF
If you’re looking to do business in Russia, it would appear that courting top political figures is the way to go.
The latest diplomatic cables obtained by WikiLeaks and discussed in today’s
New York Times
reveals that the line separating business and government interests in Russia “runs from blurry to nonexistent.”
Take Gazprom. The US embassy’s opinion of Russia’s biggest company, and the world’s largest extractor of natural gas, wasn’t exactly thrilling: “Gazprom must act in the interests of its political masters, even at the expense of sound economic decision-making.”
Not exactly reassuring news for shareholders, despite Gazprom’s assurance on its
that the company is “open for a continuous dialogue with its shareholders and all stock market players.”
The leaks also show how Intel circumvented Russia’s notorious bureaucracy by going straight to Presdient Medvedev when it wanted to import 1,000 encrypted computers for use at the company’s Russia offices.
Intel acknowledged that the meeting did occur, but said the goal was to create an expedited importing process “not only for Intel but for their customers and distributors.”
So, if you’re planning on doing business in Russia, you might be wondering what the best way is to impress Russian political figures.
offers plenty of ideas on how to impress Russian women, so surely we can parlay some of that advice into political maneuvering.
According to WomenRussia.com, the two most important things one can offer a Russian woman are “security” and “love.” Next, you must be “financially secure.” That doesn’t mean you need to be a millionaire, but it does mean you should be able to provide for family of three.
Surprsingly, good looks can get you in trouble. A “handsome appearance may possibly even have a negative effect” because this can make Russian women feel insecure.
So remember, if you ever gain an audience with Mr. Putin, show him that you love him, that you’re financially well off, and whatever you do, do NOT be more attractive than him.
Which, really, how could you be?
