The Shocking Truth (You Already Knew) About Food Courts

Print comment Post Comments
I’m not entirely sure what’s more shocking: the fact that mall food court’s are really dirty, or that it took a 3-month investigation to prove it.

MSNBC hit up three of America’s favorite touristy dining spots, the Mall of America, Boston’s Faneuil Hall in Boston, and NYC’s South Street Seaport to get the dish (oh!) on what’s really going on in these cramped kitchens.

The answer? A whole lotta cockroaches, rodents, and generally unsanitary conditions.

It doesn’t take long for someone who’s been lured in close to, say, a Panda Express by a free sample of some deliciously marinated chicken product on a toothpick to steal a glance of something dirty going on behind the counter.

But the extent to which food courts are “critically” unsanitary is pretty shocking.

The investigation found:
  • 43% of restaurants at Faneuil Hall had “critical violations.”
  • 68% of restaurants at the Mall of America had “critical violations.”
  • 84% of restaurants at the South Street Seaport had “critical violations.”
