Bacon, sausages, pork chops--when we think of pigs, most people think of meat.

But Christien Meindertsma, author of PIG 05049, which follows the afterlife of one Dutch pig, post slaughter, identified 187 products in which parts of #05049 ended up.

Medicine, bullets (the gelatin from rendered pork skin is used in the manufacture of ammunition), cardiac valves, brake discs, bubblegum, cheesecake, fortified yogurt (calcium from pig bones is added), cigarette filters (hemoglobin from pig blood is used to make them), wrinkle cream, shampoo, porcelain, and bread (L-cysteinem, an amino acid, is found in pig hair, which is an ingredient used to soften commercially produced bread) are just a few of the things pigs help produce.
