An ideal pet is a lot like a trophy wife. They're both adorable, able to perform stunts in wacky outfits, and often cost an arm and a leg to take care of. But because they're so lovable, we often pay exorbitant medical bills should they eat something they're not supposed to. After all, it's just so devastating to have to put them down.

But of our canine and feline pals, the Minneapolis Star Tribune explored what unusual appetites can cost their masters. According to the American Kennel Club and pet health-care provider PetPartners Inc, should the little furballs stray from the Purina, it could be harmful or fatal, but always pricey.

The following are items found in the tummies of our pets and what they cost to remove. In the future, keep Rex away from the dental floss.

Dogs

• Toy: $669.

• Sock: $1,173.

• Snail bait: $146.

• Golf balls: $1,844.

• Dental floss: $3,590.

• Loose change: $1,018.

Cats

• Hair band: $1,505.

• Toy ball: $1,454.
