Folgers and Maxwell House, while still leading supermarket sales of coffee (who buys coffee at the supermarket!?), are trying to make a comeback and grow their brands – which seemed to have stopped growing years ago. It seems that only my mother and about 10 other people have yet to discover that coffee can actually taste good.

Not quite the midgets of the coffee-world, the brands’stunted growth has alarmed parent companies J.M. Smucker (SJM) and Kraft Foods (KFT). So, Folgers and Maxwell House are trying to brew new business by giving their coffee blends fancy names (obviously people buy Starbucks (SBUX) because of the ridiculous names they are forced to use to order an over-priced beverage. No, really – why do people buy this sludge?)

Will creating Keurig brewing pods and names like Vanilla Biscotti give these old brands new life? Not likely, but I need a few more cups of coffee before I can think clearly.
