Thai Finance Minister Appears on Soap Opera to Shill for Government Program

Korn Chatikavanij, Thailand's Finance Minister, appeared today on "Wanida," a popular soap opera, to promote a government program that helps people repay high-interest debt.

In the episode, a character named "Mr. Prajuab" who is deeply in debt states that he has discovered a government plan that will help him get out from behind the eight-ball.

That's when Chatikavanij suddenly appears to explain the details to viewers.

"The government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has helped over 500,000 people and reduced debt burden by about 3 billion baht ($100 million) per month. It's lucky that Mr. Prajuab registered," he says.

Seems appropriate enough. I mean, even Warren Buffett made an appearance on All My Children, making his star turn opposite Susan Lucci:

Ol' Warren's not a bad little actor. And his name looks a hell of a lot better on a marquee than "Chatikavanji."
