Now replete with iPhones and Android devices, South Korea has gone mental for mobiles. According to the Korea Communications Commission, residents have activated roughly 50 million handsets nationwide -- which accounts for 1.2 million more devices than the country's 48.8 million inhabitants.

Choi Seong-Ho, the commission's communication service policy director, said, "You may say there are 1.2 million people carrying two phones, but excluding children and those with no phones, the number of multiple-phone owners could be far higher." Not to mention the people who have three or more devices.

The agency added that of those 50 million, 7.4% are smartphones, accounting for 3.67 million devices -- a shockingly low amount given that one in four Americans now uses a smartphone.

Either way, South Korea or United States, both are doomed once our devices become sentient.
