Russia Unveils "Space Hotel" Plan

SPACE CASE?
DailyFeed
You know what the worst thing is about space tourism? Once you get into orbit, there’s nowhere to go. Sure, you can arrange a stay aboard the International Space Station, but then you’re just floating among all these non-billionaire scientists, who think their “experiments” are more important than your vacation. No, that just won’t do.

Thankfully, Russian firm Orbital Technologies is here to fill the vacuum with the first-ever space hotel, a seven-guest satellite they hope to launch by 2016.

It promises the luxury that’s missing from that drab, cramped space station. “Our planned module inside will not remind you of the ISS,” Orbital Technologies chief Sergei Kostenko told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency. “A hotel should be comfortable inside, and it will be possible to look at the Earth through large portholes.”

The announcement comes just days after British tycoon Richard Branson laid out plans for his Virgin Galactic to become the first private space passenger line within 18 months, and mused about future expansion into his own space hotels. Really feels like Branson’s getting one-upped by the Ruskies, doesn’t it? It’s like the Cold War all over again, but way more frivolous.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, though, it’s this: Space beer, also announced this week, is a long-overdue development. On behalf of the mega-wealthy, we thank you, Australia.
