THE ROBOTS

The small Tuscan town of Peccioli this summer is enjoying having their garbage collected by robots, at least until the robots' crude artificial intelligence, which is not designed to handle the full range of human emotions, discovers they are garbagebots, causing them to be embarrassed at being specifically designed for this kind of work while the other robots they know work in factories or hospitals firing lasers and stuff, after which they malfunction and relentlessly hunt down their creators and squeeze their heads like that replicant did to Eldon Tyrell in that movie Bladerunner.

The robots are the creation of a group of researchers at Pisa’s Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, which received EU funding to develop a prototype of a robot that would improve urban hygiene, according to the Wall Street Journal. The result is DustCart, a bulky, wide-eyed, teal-and-chrome robot.

All you have to do is call DustCart from your cell phone and it will roll along on its Segway base to your home, text you to let you know it's there, hold out a receptacle for your garbage, then squeeze your head like that replicant did to Eldon Tyrell in that movie Bladerunner.

Do not think for a moment that you can outrun DustCart. Its battery lets it travel 10 miles before a charge. Can you run 10 miles without a charge, or maybe a drink of water? No, you cannot.

The creepy robot video below shows how happy these robots look before they discover they are being used to carry away your garbage; things like disposable razors, empty beer cans, cigarette butts and, yuck, dirty diapers.
