Most Car Buyers Chose Silver in 2010

As the precious metal dominated the market this year, so did the spraypaint.

According to a press release by DuPont, silver topped the list of most popular car colors, followed closely by black. Here's the rundown:

Regarding the study, DuPont color marketing manager Nancy Lockhart said, "Our annual global color analysis allows DuPont to share insights into global color trends with automakers as they're planning future vehicle designs." She added, "The demand for fresh, high-quality information is more relevant today than ever before, as the industry continues to see increased consumer demand for innovative vehicle design and styling."

The study shows that gray increased in popularity three percentage points from last year to tie with white. Red and blue both lost some market share -- though the press release claims red gained popularity in another section -- and brown and beige is picking up steam.

What does this tell us? Well, car buyers are keeping modest in their color choice. Silver conveys a subtle and underlying flashiness, but still conservative in its appearance.

In other words, the perfect representation of the modern day consumer.
