What many Americans don't realize is that Mexicans are almost exactly like us. Yes, our neighbors to the south are almost as obese as we are.

Of course, the United States still clings proudly to the honor of being the fattest nation on earth, but Mexico is running an extremely close second.

Five years ago, Héctor Bourges, director of nutrition at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute for Medical Sciences and Nutrition, said, "Twenty or 30 years ago, we had exceedingly healthy traditions. What is happening with globalization and modernity is that we're adopting the habits of northern countries and the United States, and that is not a good idea."

Well, they have adopted our habits and the proof is in the numbers.

According to the OECD, seven out of 10 Mexican adults are overweight, and three out of 10 are obese.

In the States, two out of three adults are overweight and one out of three is obese.

In Mexico, the government has launched an anti-obesity campaign led by Cuauhtemoc Mancha.

In the US, the government has launched an anti-obesity campaign led by Michelle Obama.

In Mexico, the soda industry has partially beaten back an initiative to ban carbonated drinks in schools.

See? They're just like us.

God help them.
