ANNALS OF (ALLEGED) BRIBERY
DailyFeed

Merck has received inquiry letters from the Department of Justice and the SEC which "seek information about activities in a number of countries and reference the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act," which bars US companies from using bribes to win business from government officials in foreign countries.

The company has been pursuing sales in emerging markets, where those who run government health programs decide which drugs they will buy.

Of course, Merck, a company founded in Germany, may just be behind the times. Until about 10 years ago, monies used for bribes were tax-deductible in Germany. Maybe someone should email their accounting department and tell them the rules have changed?
