A while back, India's government decided the country's currency needed its own symbol so it could stand proudly alongside the $, ¥, £ and €. I'm not quite sure how this slipped by me yesterday, but NPR reports that "coming up with a symbol [for the Rupee] is taking a while."
The government announced a contest to create the symbol in February, 2009, with an entry deadline of April 15th of last year. In December, the government published a list of five finalists.
The cabinet was supposed to choose the winner last week, but the Finance Minister asked for more time to review the designs. It's quite understandable what's taking so long. Obviously, India's Finance Minister doesn't want to risk alienating the four designers: #1) Submitted by: Satish "The Night Stalker" Chaudhury, Prisoner #45-6036, Parapana Agrahara Central Jail, Bangalore#2) Submitted by: Rupinder "Frankie Bones" Singh, Prisoner #228-01267, Tihar Prison Complex, Delhi#3) Submitted by: Rahul "Son of Sandeep" Rammdatt, Prisoner #12-6726856, Arthur Road Central Jail, Mumbai#4) Submitted by: Gagandeep "Jerry" Teerthankar, Prison # 345-9872364, Charalapally Central Jail, HyderabadGood luck to all.
