iPhone 4 Bug Threatens Job Performance Worldwide

SOUND THE ALARM
DailyFeed
Twice every year, I've been casually aware of the mild annoyance and confusion that Daylight Saving Time causes. The late night clock adjustment, my obsessiveness dictating that every clock be exactly synchronized, and God forbid I should wake up between two and three in the morning while trying to gauge how much longer I have to sleep.

But it's really not so bad. It's nothing more than an hour shift, many current devices update automatically, and since I'm not much of a world traveler nor ever set foot in Arizona -- which defiantly doesn't participate in Daylight Saving -- it was nothing more than a tedious semiannual routine.

Then again, I've never had an iPhone cause me to be an hour late for work.

Identified in Australia and New Zealand in early October -- and underscoring how screwed up the worldwide Daylight Saving schedule is -- a bug in the iPhone 4 prevented the device's alarm clock app to adjust along with the updated time. So owners would see the correct time in the status bar, but have their alarm sound an hour later. Apple pledged to work on the issue after Oceania's alarm fiasco, but the bug still affected many this weekend throughout Europe.

Twitter chronicled iPhone 4 owners as they stared bleary eyed at their defective alarms. Brit Simon Moores tweeted, "iPhone alarm bug strikes! I thought it was just me but apparently the bug that caused my iPhone alarm to wake me an hour late hit everyone!" Fellow England resident Conor Mulhern wrote, "I also had alarm issues this morning with an iOS4.1 iPhone, it went off exactly an hour late. Glad it may not have been just me."

Following the convoluted Daylight Saving schedule, the US rolls its clocks back this coming weekend. So if you have an iPhone 4 and you're not on good terms with your boss, be sure to set a clock radio as a backup.
