India's Tata Group: What DON'T These Guys Do?

Print comment Post Comments
Yesterday, Starbucks announced a deal to partner with Tata Coffee in a push to open retail stores in the rapidly expanding Indian coffee market.

The New York Times reports that coffee "has gained a broader following across the country in the last decade; new coffee chains appeal to young Indians who have more disposable income than their parents did when they were young. Along with being one of the world’s fastest-growing countries, India is also one of its youngest. About half of Indians are younger than 25."

Tata is often described as a "conglomerate"--which it is. But no single word seems grand enough to fully describe what a behemoth this...this...this...behemoth really is.

Let's take a look at the industries Tata's in, shall we?

Tata Advanced Materials

And those are just the divisions with "Tata" in the name. Let's continue:

Pretty impressive. Unfortunately, they still can't seem to figure out how to move the Nano off of car lots. Oh well. Tata Pigments will probably take up the slack. Or Tata Sponge Iron. Or Tata Teleservices. Or will it be Tata Refractories? While people complain that Starbucks seems to be taking over the world, Tata actually already has.
