Hitachi Steals Apple's Crown for Best Smartphone Display

The Retina Display -- a screen so nice, it was christened biologically.

While the iPhone 4 had a share of trouble with its antenna design, virtually no one faulted its gorgeous, 326dpi screen. At 960x640 with a contrast ratio of 800:1, the Retina Display's crystal-clear picture still stands as the best smartphone screen ever produced.

Until now.

Engadget reports that Hitachi has designed a 4.5-inch LCD panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution. That works out to be a 329dpi density. That's right, a whole three better than Apple! Tongue-in-cheek nitpicking aside, the Hitachi screen also sports a 1,100:1 contrast ratio, 500 nits of brightness, and -- at 4.5 inches versus the iPhone's 3.5 inches -- it's a larger, more vibrant display.

But here's the bad news: The screen isn't set to go into production until October. That's quite a wait for a fantastic display like this for smartphone users to drool over.

Then again, there is another iPhone poised to launch before the fall. Maybe Apple is all set to reclaim the championship.
