Hertz Ad Dares Renters To Violate Policy

A Consumerist reader submitted a photo of a Hertz ad for its Connect service, allowing for cars by the hour or day throughout the year. Promising the "sand in your toes," the ad features one of their vehicles parked on the beach, accompanied by a party crew toting a cooler and two lovers gallivanting by the water.

But as the reader points out, such vehicular use falls under Section VII: Prohibited Uses of the Car. The policy reads:

4.) Engage in any willful or wanton misconduct, which, among other things, may include reckless conduct such as... use off paved roads or on roads that are not regularly maintained.

However, like the car commercials warning viewers that the driver is a "professional on a closed course" and such driving "shouldn't be attempted," Hertz does provide its own disclaimer in fine print along the bottom of the photo that driving off paved roads is prohibited.

So much for fun in the sun, Hertz. What a killjoy.
