OWL, THAT'S GOTTA HURT

Harry Potter is a billion dollar brand that has delighted, entertained, and enchanted millions of kids and adults all over the world.

It’s also an evil, black magic hex that has ravished India’s wild owl population.

India’s Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that the increasing popularity of Harry Potter has directly contributed to people wanting to buy owls illegally from bird traders. In the Harry Potter universe, Harry has a pet owl, named Hedwig.

"Following Harry Potter, there seems to be a strange fascination even among the urban middle classes for presenting their children with owls," Mr Ramesh said, according to the BBC.

Owls are highly endangered in India. And Harry Potter is just the latest threat to the animal. Conservationists are also concerned that an owl massacre could occur ahead of the Hindu festival Diwali, during which thousands of owls are traditionally sacrificed.

Owls are an integral part of India’s ecosystems. They’re also integral mathematicians who can predict with stunning accuracy the number of licks it takes to get to the center of lollipops.
