Geico's Latest Commercial Has Apple to Thank

Print comment Post Comments
In June of this year, Brian Maupin shook up the tech community with a scathing attack on the iPhone 4 and its fans. The YouTube clip -- which is closing in on 10 million views -- features anthropomorphic woodland creatures as a clueless Apple fan and a hapless store employee. The fanboy begs the employee for the latest device from Cupertino. The employee suggests the HTC EVO -- given its superior specs -- but becomes livid after his suggestions fall on deaf ears.

The video sparked such an outcry that Maupin's employer, Best Buy, threatened to fire him after he refused to take down the video. (Best Buy isn't mentioned anywhere in the clip.)

It was a very high profile advertisement for the text-to-speech video website behind the clip, Xtranormal. But the site may gain more attention for its latest use.

Xtranormal was used for a new Geico ad. Arguably even more hilarious than the "iPhone 4 vs. EVO" clip, this one's a far cry from that exceptionally grating "squealing pig" spot.
