Forget Dollars or Gold. The New Currency? Honey Buns

Wait til Ron Paul gets a load of this. Fiat currency? Gold? Forget about it.

Flowers Foods (FLO)  - which can trace its origin as a regional bakery operation all the way back to 1919 - distributes a number of well-known brands, including the fantastically wholesome sounding Mrs. Freshley’s.

In fact, since its debut in 1994, Mrs. Freshley's has become a brand synonymous – so the folks at Flowers Foods tell us - with “freshness and fun.”

Here’s what else it’s now synonymous with: violent crime.

Specifically, Mrs. Freshley's Grand Honey Bun has become the favored pastry inside Florida's prisons. Inmates in the Florida prison system reportedly now buy 270,000 of these honey buns a month. Across the state, they sell more than tobacco, envelopes and cans of Coke.

Not only that, but these honey buns - according to the St. Petersburg Times - have taken on lives of their own among the criminal class: as currency for trades, as bribes for favors, as relievers for stress and substitutes for addiction.

"As you can imagine," said Janice Anderson, a spokeswoman for Flowers Foods, "this product is for those folks that feel like having something very decadent."
