CommodityOnline reports that over 300 farmers in India have committed suicide after devastating cold, frost, and rainfall due to La Nina destroyed crops in several states.

275 have killed themselves in Andhra Pradesh, 36 in Orissa, and seven in Madhya Pradesh. Crops affected include wheat, millet, sorghum, oil seeds, cotton, fruits, vegetables, and 16,000 hectares of coriander.

In related news, the cyclone currently hammering Australia has sent sugar prices to a 30-year high, with March futures reaching 34.79 cents a pound in New York and $834.70 a metric ton in London, levels not seen since the early 1980s, according to The Australian.

This year could be the third straight shortfall in global production, with Australia's output amounting to 7% of the world's total.
