"European and UK stock markets fell sharply on Friday with the costs of insuring the sovereign debt of Portugal and Greece briefly hitting record highs as contagion fears gripped markets," the Financial Times reported. "In Asia, risk aversion spread amid a sell off across the region following Thursday’s sharp losses on Wall Street and in Europe, and as investors eyed keenly awaited non-farm payroll numbers in the US later in the day."
