Courchevel Residents Find Ukrainian Steel Magnate's $6 Million Birthday Party "Revolting"

On Saturday night, Ukrainian billionaire Victor Pinchuk threw himself a $6.2 million 50th-birthday party in the French Alps.

According to the New York Post, 300 guests attended the fete in Courchevel, which featured a performance by Cirque du Soleil and food prepared by Alain Ducasse.

However, the report contends that the brash display of excess "revolted many locals in an area tired of being a winter playground for the Eastern European jet set."

A hotel employee told Le Parisien, ""I slave away all winter for a miserable wage and then when I see how some people can spend millions in a single evening it disgusts me."

Another local said, ""Six million dollars for a party ... it's obscene. It's particularly scandalous because so many people in France are having trouble trying to make ends meet, let alone buy Christmas presents, because of the [economic] crisis."

However, Courchevel's mayor, Gilbert Blanc-Tailleur, took a different view of the revelry.

“If this gentlemen didn’t celebrate his birthday in Courchevel, he would no doubt go somewhere else abroad in a Swiss or Austrian ski resort. That would be a pity for our country,” he said. “So it’s a good thing for France and for our resort where the quality of services is well known and where it will give business to our hotels.”
