The beer industry is not happy about California’s Proposition 19, which would effectively legalize marijuana in the state and allow local governments to tax it.

LA Weekly reports:

“A political action committee of the California Beer & Beverage Distributors recently gave $10,000 to the campaign to defeat Proposition 19, the November ballot initiative that would legalize pot and its cultivation and distribution.”

Steve Fox, director of government relations for the Marijuana Policy Project explains:

“Plain and simple, the alcohol industry is trying to kill the competition. They know that marijuana is less addictive, less toxic and less likely to be associated with violent behavior than alcohol. So they don’t want adults to have the option of using marijuana legally instead of alcohol. Their mission is to drive people to drink.”

Unfortunately, both sides are off the mark.

People don’t want to have to choose between beer and pot. What they want, and have always wanted, is both.

Indeed, beer-pot has been around for as long as men have wanted to make women appear more attractive while simultaneously speculating on the philosophical implications behind such behavior.

Greg Kitsock has a fascinating article about the history of cannabis brews here.

Key passage, courtesy of 17th century English sea captain Thomas Bowrey, is of course how to make the stuff.

"Pound or grinde a handfulle of the Seed and leafe together, which mixt with one Pint of fresh Water, and let it Soake neare one quarter of an houre or more, then strained through a piece of Calicoe or what else is fine, and drinke off the liquor, and in less than half an houre it's Operation will Shew it Selfe for the space of 4 or 5 hours."

Enjoy.  Provided you don't get the spins.
