As Wesley Snipes Heads to Prison for Tax Evasion, Current Inmates Receive Fraudulent Refunds From IRS

The US Marshal's Office has ordered actor Wesley Snipes to report to the Federal Correctional Institution McKean in Lewis Run, Pa. by noon on Dec. 9. to begin a three-year sentence for his 2008 conviction on tax evasion charges.

But, while Snipes is going away for non-payment, more than 48,800 US prisoners currently serving time claimed $130 million in fraudulent tax refunds--and the IRS paid out $112 million.

According to a report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration set for release today, 88% of tax returns filed by prisoners were not screened for potential fraud.

Just one question: who even knew prisoners filed tax returns?
