THE OTHER WHITE MEAT

Any article that contains the quote "I'm doing the African lion to get my name out" is A-OK in my book.

The story? Boca Tacos y Tequila, a taco shop in Arizona, announced that it’s accepting preorders for the debut of its African lion meat taco. The unusual spin on this classic dish is a part of Boca’s “Exotic Taco Wednesdays” program, which has already featured such abnormal meats as python, alligator, elk, kangaroo, and rattlesnake, the Arizona Daily Star reports.

"I've gotten a lot of questions, like if it's legal," Boca owner Brayn Mazon tells the Daily Star.

Well, technically it is (provided the lion isn’t on an endangered species list). But public reaction, at least on this Facebook page, has been anything but mixed.

Alysia Hoback writes: “Hey guys, I found the restaurant owner's profile on facebook. Send Bryan Mazon a message if you don't want him serving lion meat at this restaurant!!!”

Frances Mcsheffrey writes: “anyone have a phone number for this place? i sent him a message and he has repiled [sic] twice telling me that these lions are 'bred' for consumption!!!!! GRRRRRR”

A vitriolic Alanna Stevenson writes: “this is absolutely digusting [sic]. what a piece of…” you get the idea.

In any event, Mazon seems to be getting exactly what he wanted out of the lion meat taco—good old fashioned publicity. The Daily Star reports that Mazon expects to lose money on the lion meat tacos, which will sell for $8.75 per. Ground lion meat goes for $100, and a pound of tenderloin goes for $400.

"In all reality, what I want is just people to know that I'm here," Mazon told the Daily Star.

Mission accomplished.
