Are wage increases a net gain or loss for the United States?

"The media would like us to believe something is brewing in China. The labor unrest and subsequent raises doled out to Chinese factory workers at Foxconn and Honda plants (which led a handful of municipalities to raise their minimum wages) have attracted the foreign press. The common narrative is that these wage increases will have a spillover effect on the rest of China’s massive export-driven economy, leading to price hikes in the United States on everything from servers to sneakers. But economists are more sanguine. They say predictions of spiraling import costs are exaggerated, and the prospect of a higher-earning Chinese working class could yield positive results for Chinese citizens and our economy, too. So, whom to believe?"
