McDonald's Goes Retro

Print comment Post Comments

Now that the local McDonald’s (MCD) looks more like a modern bistro than a fast food restaurant, why not hire a fashion insider to revamp employee uniforms.

The Telegraph reports that McDonald’s has hired British fashion designer Wayne Hemingway to do just that. The new uniforms will debut this summer during the Olympic Games at the four McDonald locations at Olympic Park and Athletes village in Stratford and will be worn by all employees in the UK this fall.

Hemingway is behind the label Red or Dead and was inspired by AMC’s (AMCX) Mad Men for the new look. “We wanted classic design. A narrow tie will always be fashionable. There is a very subtle hint to the mod look, which has never gone out of fashion,” said Hemingway. “Fred Perry has never gone out of fashion. That's why we've gone for a polo shirt with a bit of a trim."

Hemingway has designed three different looks for McDonald’s employees. Those working behind the counter preping burgers will be wearing polo shirts, “in mustard yellow for the men and ‘gherkin green’ for the women. Customer care assistants have check shirts with green dark green trousers or skirts. Managers are in black and white, but with the female managers wearing a mustard yellow neck scarf.” Male managers will also sport skinny ties and female managers pencil skirts.

Looks like the pressure is on for Burger King (BKW), Wendy’s (WEN), and Kentucky Fried Chicken (YUM) to top this.

Will being served by a pimply faced teenager dressed like Don Draper make you forget you’re eating an empty calorie burger with a shelf life of at least six months? Maybe not, but at least you’ll feel a bit closer to your favorite TV show while waiting for Season Six to start.
