Taco Bell Unveils Healthy Cuisine Alongside Its Doritos Taco

Beginning July 5, Taco Bell (YUM) will feature a healthy -- dare we say, upscale -- menu called Cantina Bell alongside such delicacies as the Beefy Crunch Burrito stuffed with Flamin' Hot Fritos and the newly launched Doritos (PEP) Locos Tacos. Cantina Bell is a new venture that is positioned to be a direct competitor to Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) which has seen rapid grown since its founding in Colorado in 1993.

In a press release issued by Taco Bell, Cantina Bell is the result of a partnership with Miami-based chef Lorena Garcia and will cost under $5, substantially less than similar menu items sold at Chipotle. Garcia’s copycat menu include a Cantina Bowl and Cantina Burrito served with ingredients such as cilantro rice, citrus and herb marinated chicken, black beans, fire roasted corn-salsa, creamy cilantro dressing, and pico de Gallo.

Garcia’s status as a celebrity chef will continue to skyrocket this summer with her inclusion in the next installment of Bravo’s (CMCSA) Top Chef Masters on July 25. The world will see what she can whip up under pressure during the Quickfire challenges.

Chipotle doesn’t appear worried. In an interview with, Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold spoke about Taco Bell’s new menu. “There’s a lot more to what we do than black beans and corn salsa,” said Chris Arnold. “What makes Chipotle work is more ingredients from sustainable sources with traditional cooking methods in a comfortable environment. There’s a lot of soul behind the menu.”

With the startling statistics regarding America’s obesity epidemic constantly in the news, combined with the rise of the celebrity chef moniker, other fast food chains will doubtlessly fall in line with Taco Bell. I dread the day Tofurky or some sort of foie gras substitute appears on a menu at Kentucky Fried Chicken.
