How the Android Market Evolved

It wasn't until the release of the original Motorola Droid did we finally see the scope and potential of Google's mobile OS. Up until then, Android was barely an also-ran in the shadow of Apple, Research in Motion, Palm, and Microsoft. Well, two years and a couple hundred million users later, Android has surpassed iOS to become the most popular mobile OS worldwide -- turning the smartphone battle into a two-horse race

And one of the cornerstones of Android's popularity is the rapid growth of its online marketplace. Over the past few years, the number of apps within the Android Market has exploded -- supplying members of Google's flock with solid counterparts to iTunes Store selections. Rarely do Android users find that their device can't perform a task that the iPhone can.

More often than not, the reverse is the case.
