Recently David Drummond, a member of Google's legal team, spoke out against the patent system, calling it fundamentally broken. While championing Android's success in the company's official blog, he noted that in the wake of a booming market share has risen "a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents."

It's no secret that patent lawsuits have now become par for the course in the tech industry -- especially for mobile manufacturers. Charting the flow of litigation between the major players produces a spiderweb of spaghetti -- most of which involve questionable propriety.

So when everyone is suing everyone else over features that everyone independently develops, where does that leave innovation?
