Ah, the salary bump. Elusive. Legendary. Like successfully hailing a taxi in a downpour, it's been so long since you've seen it happen, you have to wonder if it ever actually did.

It's no surprise that negotiating a raise is a delicate art -- especially in this job market. Bosses are well aware that few employees are willing to risk months on the job hunt rather than wallow in a position without adequate compensation.

But if you know that your work warrants financial recognition, then it might be time to start planning for a little one-on-one with the ol' employer.

In a very helpful infographic, lists some tips on how and when to ask for that raise. But be forewarned: Depending on your position, a higher salary won't necessarily bring you happiness.

But hey, it wouldn't hurt to find out, would it?
