Nicotine Fights Parkinson's, Provided the Cigarettes Don't Kill You First

Rebecca Greenfield over at The Atlantic Wire has uncovered a new study which finds nicotine can protect against Parkinson's disease.

Writing in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, researchers at Paris' Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle Épinière detail how nicotine "rescues dopamine neurons" -- the loss of which, Greenfield explains, "is a hallmark of Parkinson's."

Everyone already knows that gambling can improve the health of elderly people, red wine makes an excellent sunscreen, and single malt whisky fights cancer.

Now we find out our Newports are keeping us healthy?

Well, can't always get what you want. Researcher Gerald Weissmann warns, "Even if smoking protects you from Parkinson's, you might not live long enough to develop the disease because smoking greatly increases the risk for deadly cancers and cardiovascular diseases."
